By William Fisher What with the financial meltdown, two wars, and a myriad of other problems, even news-junkies can be forgiven for missing this story. So let me help you catch up. Earlier this month, the great state of Mississippi celebrated "The Spirit of America Day" to commemorate the achievements of its outstanding male high school athletes. "The Spirit of America Day" was blessed – as it has been for more than a generation -- by a resolution from the Mississippi state legislature (on a3/20/2009

C. Victor Lander, the lead judge of Dallas' municipal courts, has come under fire for a comment he recently made in The Dallas Weekly, an independent black publication. I have pasted an article from the Dallas Weekly below and you can also check out a related piece in the Dallas Morning News . Here's the offending remark: "But as recent articles in the Dallas Morning News have shown, it is clear that the more mess that has been made by others, the more it is up to us to clean it up. Lawyers for some members of the "Jena Six" say prosecutors and defense attorneys are discussing the possible terms of plea agreements that would resolve the remaining criminal cases. Lawyers for Jesse Ray Beard and Carwin Jones wouldn't disclose details of Wednesday's talks. Beard, Jones, and four other black Jena High School students were charged with attempted murder in the 2006 attack on a white classmate. The charges spawned a massive civil rights march through the Louisiana city in 2007.Jena Six Update (KALB Alexandria)

Folks in Tulia, Texas breathed a collective sigh of relief when the trophy for "most racist town in America" passed to Jena, Louisiana. The hardware is back in Texas. Paris, a community of 25,000 in Deep East Texas, now bears the distinction of being America's most racist municipality. Does the shoe fit? Of course not. In "The Subtle Racism of the Republiklans" (9 Feb 09) we explored the viral joke from the inauguration, and the "Proud to be White" letter that's made a new flurry in the blogosmear™. We talked about the sentencing of a man who shot people in a church because he hated "liberals." And we talked about Ex-Klan Grand Googley-Moogley David Duke's enraged response to the GOP electing a "Black racist"as RNC Chair: "To Hell With the Republican Party!
